Students majoring in the social sciences can graduate with the following degrees: History (BA/BS/MA), Political Science (BA,BS) and Social Sciences (BSE, BA, BS). The department offers minors in History, Political Science, National Security, Public Administration, Geography, and Philosophy.
Courses in the department allow students to explore the broadest possible background of information about the world and their place in it, thereby gaining an understanding of the historical and geographical context of societies today and in the past. The department contributes courses that serve both professional needs and the requirements of a liberal arts education.
Programs for students in the department are designed to meet a variety of future employment goals, including in the areas of teaching secondary education, government, and business. Many students graduating from the department go on to pursue graduate education in law school, public administration, public history, and in a wide variety of other areas. Students completing the master of arts in history have continued from ESU into Ph.D. programs in universities around the US.
